What You Can Do -Prevention Tips

There are many activities you can do, and personal choices you can make, to increase your chances of having a good, healthy quality of life. Each of them can be broken into numerous subsections as well – meaning that there are literally hundreds of dos and don’ts.

To bring a little focus to the situation, we list in Facing Your
Fifties
the top12 steps (in order of importance) you, as a 50s male, can take to help yourself.

Listed here are the first six (did you think we’d give everything
away in this web site?).

1. Don’t smoke. It’s the worst, most damaging thing you
can do to your body.

2. Have a health assessment. If you don’t already know, you need to find out where your general health stands before attempting to improve your health. It doesn’t count that you think you’re healthy – a doctor needs to check you out.

3. Exercise. Any kind of exercise is better than none, but try to incorporate all three critical elements: aerobics, stretching, and strengthening. Start slow and work up. See the Prevention Chapter for details.

4. Eat moderately from all food groups. What goes in is critical to how healthy you are and how good you feel. See the Prevention Chapter for details.

5. Drink alcohol in moderation. Up to two glasses a day of beer, wine, or spirits. More and you lose the benefits and begin to adversely affect your health.

6. Know your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major contributor to stroke and heart disease, the number one killer in America. If it’s high, get on medication to lower it, then look into lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise.

There Are Six More Prevention Items That Round Out The Top 12 Prevention Tips Mentioned in Facing Your Fifties.

Think of your overall health as your retirement fund, and any effort you make toward good health as "saving" for retirement.
